National TA Day is a chance to recognize the vital role Teaching Assistants play in schools. It’s a rewarding career that offers variety and opportunity to make a real difference. To celebrate National TA Day, we’ve put together some tips from experienced Teaching Assistants to help you succeed and enjoy your role.
- Build bonds and unlock learning
Susan says… “Unless you can stay in the same school, it doesn’t allow you to build relationships with students which I think is key for kids’ learning.”
Why it helps: Consistency makes pupils feel safe and known, so they engage faster. It also helps you and the Teacher build on a plan, instead of restarting each week.
- Keep notes
Andrea’s tip… “Take notes throughout the day about the activities you do and the behaviour of the student you are supporting. Sharing this with the teacher is very helpful, and it also allows you to reflect on areas where you may need more information to provide the best possible support.”
Why it helps: Quick notes capture triggers and strategies that worked. They make handovers clearer and help you spot patterns you can act on.
- Ask early and often
Eve’s advice… “Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling with anything or have any questions about anything; it won’t be as scary as it seems and people always want to help you.”
Why it helps: Asking early cuts guesswork and stress. You learn school routines faster and stop small issues turning into bigger behaviour problems.
- Reset and rejoin
Nahed shares… “There have been times when a student became overwhelmed and I’ve taken them outside for a one-to-one, calmed them, and they’ve been able to rejoin the lesson.”
Why it helps: A short, calm reset protects learning time for everyone.
