This role offers an exciting opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting children with a range of special educational needs to make a meaningful impact in their academic and personal development.
Role Overview:
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be instrumental in providing tailored support to pupils with diverse learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, and other SEN. Your role will involve working closely with these children to help them achieve their full potential in an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Individual and Small Group Support: Provide focused assistance to individual pupils or small groups, helping them with their learning activities, supporting their academic progress, and addressing their specific needs.
Implementation of SEN Strategies: Collaborate with teachers and the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) to implement and adapt individual Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) and other support strategies. This includes setting goals, tracking progress, and adjusting support as necessary.
Classroom Assistance: Support the class teacher in creating an inclusive classroom environment. This involves adapting lesson plans, preparing resources, and ensuring that all pupils, particularly those with SEN, are actively engaged in learning activities.
Behaviour Management: Assist with managing behaviour in the classroom by implementing positive behaviour strategies and supporting pupils in developing self-regulation and coping skills.
Monitoring and Reporting: Observe and record the progress of pupils with SEN, providing regular updates to teachers and parents. Your observations will help in shaping the ongoing support provided to each child.
Communication and Collaboration: Maintain effective communication with teachers, parents, and other professionals involved in the pupils’ education. Participate in meetings and contribute to discussions on how best to support each child.
Promoting Independence: Encourage and support pupils in developing their independence and self-confidence. Provide guidance and strategies that help them to become more self-reliant learners.
Creating a Supportive Environment: Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere in the classroom where all pupils feel valued, respected, and supported in their learning journey.
Qualifications and Skills:
Experience in SEN: Previous experience working with children or adults with special educational needs is essential.
Knowledge of SEN Practices: Familiarity with SEN support practices and tools, such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, or Colourful Semantics, will be beneficial.
Empathy and Patience: Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a genuine commitment to supporting children with SEN are crucial for success in this role.
Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary for collaborating with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders.
Commitment to Inclusive Education: A deep belief in the value of inclusive education and a commitment to helping all pupils achieve their potential are essential qualities for this position.
